Oddero Moscato d’Asti 2007

Background:

Product from Italy, made of Moscato d’Asti.

Price:

$18.99

Moscato d’Asti is a kind of sweet white wine, a little sparkling, with low proof (around 5%.) This wine is very fruity and sweet; you could immediately taste the pear-flavor in it. However, it’d be much more balanced by adding some mineral or acid flavor to it

Alcohol Calorie Comparison

According to Dr. Finkel, M.D., a Clinical Professor at Boston University Medical Center, moderate wine drinking does have potential healthy benefits (http://wine.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ/Ya&sdn=wine&cdn=food&tm=362&f=00&tt=14&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.thewinenews.com/aprmay00/comment.html). Additionally, the polyphenols found in red wines may lower both heart attack and stroke risk.

It’s definitely not an encouragement to drinking. It’s a matter of personal choice (after legal age). However, among beer, liqueur, and wine, make a smart choice. Think before you sip!!

Anima Negra AN/2 2005

anima-negra-an-2-05

anima-negra-an-2-05

Background:

Product from Majorca (Mallorca), Spain’s largest island

65% callet + 20% mantonegre-fogoneu + 15% syrah

Price:

$23.99

It’s been aged in the oak (70% French + 30% American, 35% new) for 12 months before been bottled. Except Syrah, Callet and Mantonegre-fogoneu are pretty rare types of grape. However, the taste was pretty normal, leaning to a little bit acid. As seen in the picture, the label is very “Spain,” vivid, eye-catching red.

Granbazan Albarino Verde 2006

Background:

100% Albarino-product from Rias Baixas, Spain

Price

$11.99 (375ml)

The taste goes extremely well with seafood. In addition, this smaller size makes it best mate to appetizers, like shrimp cocktail or raw oysters. Very “Seafood Style” white wine, this takes you to some raw bar along Spain coast.

Bioldo Prosecco NV

Background:

Prosecco is a type of Italian white grapes and it also defines the taste of this kind of wine-slight sparkling with some bitterness at the very end.

Price:

$11.99

This one is pretty light, kinda salty, and it’s just fine to enjoy it solely without complement.

Olivier Cousin Gamay 2007

Background:

Made by Gamay, a type of grape produced in the middle region in France, Loire.

Price:

$19.99

Perhaps it’s organic wine, the taste is a little bit uncommon. “A hint of funk,” that’s how it introduction says. Wondering if that’s where the idea of label was from.

Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Rose 1997

Background:

From Rioja, Spain, though bottled in 1997, this rose is just in the mass market.

Composition:

60% Grenache + 30% Tempranillo + 10% Viura

Price:

$26.9

Compared to common Rose, this one has a flavor of malt and metal; gotta be honest, this rose is really not my type. Very special and distinct characteristic, for those who are tired of conventional tastes, it’s definitely worth a try.

Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva 1985

Intro:

Lopez de Heredia is a Spanish winery with long history.

Located in Rioja region, Lopez de Heredia sticks to the traditional method, using natural yeast only.

This Gran Reserva (1985) had been in the oak for 8 years then bottled and aged in the winery.

As you could tell from the image, the bottle was sealed  by wax Instead of tinfoil, a very different way from common methods.

Composition:
Tempranillo 75% +  Garnacho 15% +  Mazuelo 5% + Graciano 5%

Price:

$89.99

The color tends to be more orange than purely red. The taste of tannic is pretty gentle. Overall the taste is with complexity and depth. However, if you prefer stronger taste, this might be not that powerful.

famous wine quotations

It’s hard to believe that there are so many quotations about wine.

Some are pretty witty, while others are more for fun

Below are some of my favorites

1. [Grapes are] the most noble and challenging of fruits.
Malcolm Dunn, Head Gardener to the 7th Viscount Powerscourt, c 1867
Quotes in ‘Phylloxera’ by Christy Campbell

2. Good wine is a good familiar creature if it be well used.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
Othello, II. iii. (315)

3. A man not old, but mellow, like good wine.
Stephen Phillips (1845-1915)
Ulysses, III. ii

4. Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.

“Wine … offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than possibly any other purely sensory thing which may be purchased.”
Ernest Hemingway
Death in the Afternoon

(Hemingway is probably the most famous one in “worldwide wine Hall of Fame and Museum,” if there’s one, like that for athletes.)

5. Wine is bottled poetry.
Robert Louis Stevenson

6. Alcohol – the cause of and solution to all of life’s problems.

The whole world is about three drinks behind.

Homer Simpson

(Homer Simpson, a character in the cartoon “Simpson family,” is supposed to be in the celebrity hall for wine as well, the less witty one.)

7. Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.

Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.

Benjamin Franklin

8. Beer is made by men, wine by God!

Martin Luther

9. Men are like wine – some turn to vinegar, but the best improve with age.

Pope John XXIII

10. No nation is drunken where wine is cheap, and none sober where the dearness of wine substitutes ardent spirits as the common beverage.

Thomas Jefferson

Can you believe it!! Martin Luther, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Pope showed up here too!!

The above is just small surface of the iceberg.Thirsty for more quotes? Check the following websites.
